HOLLY HUNT Reintroduces Vladimir Kagan’s First Curved Sofa
To celebrate the 75th anniversary of Kagan’s Serpentine and Freeform sofas, this vintage reissue pays tribute to the design that inspired these iconic silhouettes
Leading modern design brand HOLLY HUNT is excited to introduce the Original Curve Sofa by Vladimir Kagan Design Group – a modern reproduction of Kagan’s earliest curved sofa design, produced around 1950. Launching this August, this vintage reintroduction celebrates the 75th anniversary of Kagan’s iconic Serpentine and Freeform sofas, and will be available exclusively through HOLLY HUNT showrooms and HOLLY HUNT partner showrooms.
Around 1950, Kagan embarked on a mission to redefine the modern sofa, envisioning a piece that merged the refined construction of traditional upholstery with a sleek, contemporary silhouette, tight seat and back, and sculptural flowing form. The resulting design was a bold departure from the conventional straight-lined sofa. Developed with his clients in mind, many of whom were art collectors, Kagan designed a sofa that curved gracefully into a room, freeing up wall space for artwork and encouraging conversation among guests. Although nameless at the time, this piece would later become recognized as the archetype for Kagan’s succeeding Serpentine and Freeform sofas, emblematic of his refined yet avant-garde design aesthetic.
The catalyst for this reissue came in December 2024, when a private collector reached out to Vladimir Kagan Design Group requesting provenance for one of Kagan’s earliest curved sofas, originally purchased from the Kagan-Dreyfuss store in New York City in the early 1950s. What began as a simple request unfolded into an opportunity to honor the roots of Kagan’s design DNA — and with the 75th anniversary of the Serpentine and Freeform sofa on the horizon, it seemed kismet.
“The discovery of this design in particular was truly unexpected and offered us a rare opportunity to explore the origins of one of the more foundational pieces in Kagan’s Classic Collection,” says Chris Eitel, Director of Design and Production at Vladimir Kagan Design Group. “In reproducing this replica of the first Kagan curved sofa, we reflect on Vladi’s forward-thinking spirit, while also celebrating a form that came to shape some of his most influential designs for years to come.”
With this reintroduction, Eitel stayed true to Kagan’s original vision, thoughtfully crafting the piece with the same pioneering techniques that his mentor established in the 1950s and maintaining the hallmarks of this early design: a solid wood frame, eight-way hand-tied springs, layered foam construction, and its distinctive ball casters. This reissue stands as a true celebration of Kagan’s innovative craftsmanship and his enduring legacy stewarded by Eitel.
“Chris’ unique position as Kagan’s protégé has enabled the Original Curve Sofa to take on a new life, while preserving the designer’s abiding design language and artistic vision,” says Jo Annah Kornak, SVP and Executive Creative Director at HOLLY HUNT. “The timing could not have been better with the Serpentine and Freeform sofas turning 75 this year.”
Each Original Curve Sofa comes with a special numbered plaque etched with the original Vladimir Kagan logo and a certificate of authenticity. This launch reflects Eitel’s continued mission to honor his mentor’s legacy through vintage reissues — following the Spring 2025 archival reintroductions of the Barrel Series, a contemporary translation of one of Vladimir Kagan’s most iconic silhouettes.

Vladimir Kagan is widely considered to be one of the most prolific American mid-century modern designers, known for his mastery of ergonomics and sculptural approach to furniture, creating “vessels to hold the human body.” His work quickly gained popularity among creative luminaries in art, film and industry and earned him international recognition. Kagan remained an active designer and craftsman until his passing in 2016 at the age of 88, leaving his brand in the hands of Chris Eitel, his long-time apprentice and protégé. Kagan’s legacy lives on today through Eitel, now Director of Design and Production of the Vladimir Kagan Design Group. Today, the brand is part of the HOLLY HUNT portfolio and available through all HOLLY HUNT and partner showrooms.
